Description
JAHAN - Join and Help Afghanistan Now is a 501(c)(3)non-profit, non-political, humanitarian organization committed to helping women and children inside Afghanistan find their way toward self-sufficiency. JAHAN aims to set up two types of on-going programs:

1) The immediate assistance of widows and orphans through the distribution of food items to various facilities.

2) Long-term support of orphans and needy children through the sponorship program.

The organization's purpose is to establish immediate assistance for widows and orphans and also provide a living allowance covering food and other basic necessities for children to allow them return to school. Immediate assistance includes purchase and distribution of food for the starving, but more importantly the organization's aim is to provide the chance for the children to get an education and later be able to become employed, self-sufficient, and no longer dependent on cash handouts.

Through our website, you can sponsor children from our program or Afghanistan Demain, one of our trusted partner organizations.

Description
Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is an organization of Afghan and non-Afghan women from the New York area who are committed to ensuring the human rights of Afghan women.

WAW promotes the agency of local Afghan women through the creation of safe forums where Afghan women can network, develop programs to meet their specific needs, and participate in human rights advocacy in the international sphere.

WAW raises funds for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, particularly schools and health facilities for women and children. Recognizing that the ability to earn their living is fundamental to the empowerment of women, WAW supports the development of vocational training programs for women in Afghanistan who have been denied access to education and professional training.

The inclusion of women in all decision-making processes is a requirement of a democratic society. WAW advocates for the representation of women in all areas of life in Afghanistan: political, social, cultural and economic.

Category  NGO  arrow  Women & Children rights
Description
Hagar Afghanistan opened its offices in Kabul, Afghanistan in June, 2008. Hagar Afghanistan exists both to support existing efforts to assist highly vulnerable women and children, and to identify new areas of work, and bring its expertise to meeting these needs.

In Afghanistan, domestic violence, rape, prostitution, severe disability, addiction, child abuse, homelessness, mental illness, trauma, slavery and bonded labour, and forced marriage are all areas of enormous need, where women and children are at particular risk, or suffer through lack of assistance. Hagar’s mission is to assist such women and children to recover from trauma and exploitation, regain a sense of dignity and selfhood, and work together to restore them to independence and wholeness, both economically and socially.

Either directly, or through partnerships with other NGOs, we provide counselling and trauma recovery, shelter and housing, job training and job readiness preparation, and job placement and supported employment. We recognise that the journey of recovery is much longer for some people than for others and hence do not terminate our work with clients at a given point, but offer ongoing assistance where needed.

The Country Representative for Hagar Afghanistan is Phil Sparrow, an Australian national. He has five years’ experience living and working in Afghanistan with various NGOs and the UN, and is fluent in Dari (one of the official languages). Phil is trained in social work, psychology and has a Masters in International Development. He has also authored a book on Afghan refugees, entitled, ‘From Under a Leaky Roof: Afghan refugees in Australia’ (Fremantle Press, 2005).

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan is a volunteer not-for-profit organization founded in 1996 with over ten chapters across Canada. The goals are to advance education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families; and to educate and increase the understanding of Canadians about human rights in Afghanistan.

Donor-funded projects are implemented and managed in partnership with Afghan non-profit organizations. These projects include a number of community schools, village libraries, an orphanage, as well as teacher training, literacy, English and computer classes. The projects are funded mainly from individual donations from Canadians and 100% of funds donated go to women-centered projects in Afghanistan. Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan members were honoured with the YMCA Calgary Peace Award in the International category for their long-standing contribution to supporting peace and human rights for Afghan women and their families.

Promote  Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan
Description

RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, was established in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1977 as an independent political/social organization of Afghan women fighting for human rights and for social justice in Afghanistan. The founders were a number of Afghan woman intellectuals under the sagacious leadership of Meena who in 1987 was assassinated in Quetta, Pakistan, by Afghan agents of the then KGB in connivance with fundamentalist band of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar . RAWA’s objective was to involve an increasing number of Afghan women in social and political activities aimed at acquiring women’s human rights and contributing to the struggle for the establishment of a government based on democratic and secular values in Afghanistan. Despite the suffocating political atmosphere, RAWA very soon became involved in widespread activities in different socio-political arenas including education, health and income generation as well as political agitation.
